Sake: The “Drinkable Beauty Serum.” Discovering the Power of Fermentation
Share
To us in Japan, Sake is far more than just a beverage. It is deeply rooted in our daily lives—offered to the gods at shrines and shared during celebrations to bring people together. But did you know that Sake is also a "high-concentration amino acid elixir" unlike anything else in the world?
Here is the story of why SAKEGLOW chose Sake (and Sake Kasu) as the origin of our skincare philosophy.
Over 10 Times the Amino Acids of Wine
The most defining characteristic of Sake is the abundance of amino acids created during its unique fermentation process. It is said to contain over ten times the amount found in red wine.
Interestingly, about half of the "Natural Moisturizing Factor" (NMF) found in our skin's stratum corneum is composed of amino acids. This means Sake possesses a composition that is remarkably similar to our skin itself, allowing for natural affinity and absorption.
Beauty Born from Koji
There is an old Japanese saying: "The Toji’s (Sake brewer’s) hands are always white and beautiful." The secret behind this legend lies in the power of Koji mold, the key player in fermentation. Koji produces skin-loving components like Kojic Acid and α-EG (Alpha-EG), which is known to increase collagen density. These elements work together to deliver deep moisture and a translucent, healthy glow to the skin.
Skincare as "Okiyome" (Purification)
Since ancient times, Sake has been revered as "purifying water." Using the power of fermentation to care for your skin at the end of the day is more than just a routine. It is a ritual of Okiyome—cleansing not only the impurities from your skin but also purifying your mind and spirit.(At least, for me!)
More than just a luxury item, Sake is an essence that balances both skin and soul. SAKEGLOW is proud to deliver this "Wisdom of Fermentation"—a treasure of Japan—to you through modern skincare.
